Welcome to 2018
Grade 5 and 6 have hit the ground running this year! We are already working in Streamed Maths Groups for Place Value. This has involved students reading, writing, organising and comparing numbers. Our next topic for Maths will be Addition and Subtraction which will begin in Week 7.
Students have been researching democracy, government and how laws are made and changed. This has resulted in many interesting debates and discussions as to how society is run and how they might make a difference in the future. It seems we may have some future politicians on our hands!
We anticipate that by the end of Week 7 your child will have an individual reading strategy to focus on in class and at home. This will run alongside a number of other reading strategies that will be taught explicitly during class. Feel free to read with your child at home to help them reach their goal.
During Writing, we have focused on persuading our audience. Students have created solid arguments, backing them up with evidence and examples. Be prepared for them to try out their persuasive skills on you at home.
Our Social Skills focus has been on students identifying their strengths and weaknesses and creating personal goals to support them in their social development.
Open Water Excursion
Students participated in an Open Water Swimming Program running over 2 days at Edithvale Beach. Students discussed CPR skills, used everyday objects as lifesaving devices, learnt to surface if something went wrong in the water and learnt how to identify and escape rips.
A number of grade 5 and 6 students represented Narre Warren North Primary School at Noble Park Swimming Pool. They represented our school with pride and were very successful in their respective races.
Students have begun preparing for Interschool Sports which will begin in Term 2. We have been practising Volleystars, T-ball, Netball and Handball.
