During Term 2, students from Grades 3 and 4 have continued to build reading stamina through the CAFÉ Reading Program. Each CAFÉ sessions are broken into read to self or read to someone, explicit teaching and a follow up activity. Students also work in small groups with the teacher during strategy groups. Strategies are given to students to improve their Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency and Expand their vocabulary, please be sure to check your child’s diary for a ‘Strategy Slip’ that explains how you can assist them with this at home.

In Writing, students in Grade 3 will be revising how to write to a stimulus in readiness for NAPLAN. During this time, they will be revising narratives, persuasive texts and writing conventions. The Grade 4s will be immersing themselves in fairy tales and will create their own fractured fairy tale. We will also continue to look at grammar and punctuation skills.

For Spelling the Grade 3 and 4 students continue to work in differentiated spelling groups on different word patterns and sounds. We appreciate the parents who assist their children with the spelling activities and word sorts at home.

For Oral language, students will use a wordless picture storybook to tell an oral story. They will work in small groups to devise their own oral story to match the pictures. These stories must capture the art of storytelling. It would benefit your child greatly to discuss what makes good stories, great stories.

Students in Grades 3 and 4 work in ability based groups for Number. Students have learned about mental and written strategies for subtraction, including the jump, split and compensation strategies, as well as vertical addition with trading. Students will be learning mental  strategies multiplication including multiplication facts, doubling, split and compensation strategies as well as written methods such as extended and contracted multiplication. In division students will be learning division facts as well as the mental strategies of halving, split strategy and the tests of divisibility. Written strategies will include sharing, recognising the connection between multiplication and division and division algorithms including trading.

In other areas of Maths, students have been learning about area. They have learned how to find the area of shapes using whole and half grid squares. They are also learning the formula of length x width = area. We will be learning about Location including using simple scales, legends and directions to interpret information contained in basic maps. For Probability we will conduct chance experiments, identify and describe possible outcomes and recognise variation in results and describe possible everyday events and order their chances of occurring.

Our Term 2 theme for Inquiry is ‘Change’. The students in Grades 3 and 4 will be learning about the life in 18th century England and the voyage of the First Fleet. We will investigate the events that led up to the First Fleet setting sail, such as an increase in crime and overcrowding in the prisons. We will follow the voyage from England to Australia and learn about the living conditions for convicts on board. Students will also learn about what life in the colony was like when they arrived in Australia. This unit will involve a range of immersion experiences, hands on and real life learning, games, and the opportunity for students to show their learning through a project which will be worked during class over the course of the term.
