The Year 5/6 students have quickly settled back into the new school year. With our focus on ‘Building a Culture of High Expectations’ students are being encouraged to come to school with an open mind, a willingness to try new things and always endeavouring to do their best.

We have been starting each day with ‘Ready to Learn’ activities aimed at building relationships, confidence and preparing for the learning throughout the day. Each day has a theme:

-Moving Monday (participating in movement activities, e.g. dance, yoga, drama etc)

-Talking Tuesday (circle time and small group discussions)

-Wacky Wednesday (fun icebreaker activities, improvisation activities)

-Thinking Thursday (brainstorming or riddles)

-Figure it out Friday (icebreaker activities and problem solving)

During our Reading sessions students have been building their reading stamina, revising strategies for choosing appropriate texts (IPick) and are now starting to look at the CAFÉ strategies.

This term in Writing we are studying ‘Persuasive’ texts that are designed to convince a reader to a particular point of view. We are learning how to state an opinion then use supporting arguments. Next we will be looking at what vocabulary and language we can use to enhance our writing.

In Mathematics, we are beginning with Place Value to ensure students have a sound understanding of whole and decimals numbers. We will also be investigating rounding, special numbers (e.g. squares), fractions and money.

This term’s Inquiry focuses on the concept of ‘Identity’. The unit aims to give students an understanding of themselves, their values and how this prepares them for the physical and emotional changes they will experience as they get older.

The Year 5 and 6 students have enjoyed beginning the Buddy Program. Each student is paired with a Prep student to assist them in their first few weeks of school.
