Inquiry Topic Focus – Sustainability

The students will explore Sustainability throughout the term. Each 1/2 class will consider how they sustain their health, their friendships and their environment.

The students will explore the Sustainability topic whilst posing the following questions:

  1. How can we leave a tiny footprint on the environment?
  2. Do we know what we can reuse, reduce and recycle?
  3. How can we set goals and influence others to look after our environment?

The students by the end of the term will present their findings in different ways to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of Sustainability.


This term will be spent developing students deeper understanding of their reading strategies. We will continue to build established routines for CAFÉ in the classroom. The students build their reading stamina by demonstrating good reading behaviours. The 1/2 Team are striving to develop the students’ fluency, dedicating a Fluency Friday each week. They will work on these strategies whilst reading Reader’s Theatre texts.

Each class will plan CAFÉ Reading separately for their class based on each student’s needs. We will teach students the strategies at their point of need.


The students have been showing their Mathematic skills in the classroom. Flexible groupings will continue this term, where the children will work across the Grade 1 and 2 grades in the area of Number. Students will be placed in ability and strategy based groups, based on Pre-Test results. They will work on skills rather than levels. We are dedicated to building Mental Maths skills and fluency to enable students to work more efficiently in Maths.

Term 1 Number Focus: Patterns (skip counting) Algebra (Subtraction, Addition), Financial Maths (Our reward system is dedicated to Financial Maths)

Term 1 Measurement and Geometry Focus:  Time and Duration (Clocks, months and days), Location and Transformation (Including mapping).

Term 1 Statistics and Probability: Chance and data.


The children in Grade 1 and 2 will continue to participate in the SMART Spelling program to build their spelling skills. Students will receive a spelling sound and differentiated levelled words that contain that particular sound. Students are able to choose their spelling words and work on learning how to spell them in various hands on activities throughout the week. The students will be explicitly taught their sound and tested a week later to see how they use this sound within sentences. There may be new words added to ensure students are able to use that sound. These sounds may include, graphs (a,s,d), digraphs (th, ea, ow), trigraphs (igh, dge) and split digraphs (a_e, o_e).

Students will also be taught about prefixes (unhappy) and suffixes (carefully) to build words. They will learn specific spelling rules such as:

  • Dropping the ‘e’ and adding the vowel suffix.
  • When the second last letter makes the sound ‘a’, ‘e’, ‘i’, ‘o’, ‘u’, double the last letter and add the vowel suffix.


Our whole school approach to Writing is through the SCRIPTS Program where we focus on 7 different learning sections in writing:

I: IdeasStrategies to help students be creative.

P: PunctuationStrategies to help students punctuate sentences.

The 1/2 Students will focus on all of these sections throughout the year. As teachers we will focus on how these sections will specifically link to certain text types. The 2 Text Types we will be focussing on will be Information Reports and Persuasive Texts.

Social Skills

Social skills are taught and discussed every Monday school wide. We pride at our focus in this area and the need for students to have strong and positive social skills. The following Social Skills areas taught this term will be:

Growth Mindset/ Ready To Learn

Our focus this term is building children’s responsibly. The 1/2 teachers are working with the students to build their responsibly each morning by asking them to reflect on their feelings each morning, change their reader and unpack their bags ready for the day. Building this responsibility gives students practice to be organised and self-sufficient.

We will continue to develop our students positive self-thinking. We want our students to believe their abilities and skills can be developed through dedication and hard work. This builds students resilience and persistence when challenged. We encourage our students to accept things may be a challenge, however we can use positive self-talk and motivation to build success. The students will learn how to build their own positive self-thinking and how to support others in a safe learning environment.

Each morning the students have been participating in the Ready to Learn time during 9:00 – 9:15. It is a time where they can have fun and settle into the classroom. There are different themes each day including; Moving Monday, Talking Tuesday, Wacky Wednesday, Thinking Thursday and Figure it out Friday (sometimes Funky Friday).

Our Ready to Learn spaces in each classroom is designed to help students know their emotions and understand how deal with them in a positive way. The students are given time to calm their minds and choose a quiet activity to help sooth any worries they may be feeling. This enables the students to self-regulate their emotions and come back to the class ready to learn.
