Inquiry Topic Focus – Community
The students will learn about the services in their community. They will consider sustainable practices as they design and construct model buildings for a precinct in their community. Students will also learn about navigation as they consider the language of direction and location.
The students will explore their community whilst posing the following questions:
• What services are in my community?
• How can I use a map to navigate my community?
• Who in my community can help me in an emergency?
• How can we build with sustainability in mind?
By the end of the unit students will be able to identify the local services that can be found in the community and discuss their importance.
This term will be spent continuing established routines for CAFÉ in the classroom. The students will build their reading stamina by demonstrating good reading behaviours. The 1/2 Team are dedicated to lengthen the time students read without stopping. The children will be practising Read to Self and Read to Someone to build their reading stamina.
Teachers will explicitly teach the CAFÉ strategies in each area of Reading. Students will work towards building their Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency and Expanding their vocabulary. This will be taught through whole class instruction and when working together to perfect these skills when reading.
Students later on in the term will receive their individual strategies and will practise these skills each morning. The teachers will conference with each student one-on-one to give the students the best chance to practise their own reading strategy and develop deeper understanding of texts.
The students have been showing their Mathematic skills in the classroom. Flexible groupings will begin in week 4 this term, where the children will work across Grade 1 and Grade 2 in the area of Number. Students will be placed in ability and strategy based groups, based on Pre-Test results.
Term 1 Number Focus: Number and Place Value, Money and Financial Maths and Patterns.
Term 1 Measurement and Geometry Focus: Time, Location & Transformation.
Term 1 Statistics and Probability: Data Representation and Interpretation.
The children in Grades 1/2 will be participating in the SMART Spelling program to build their spelling skills. Students will receive a spelling sound and differentiated levelled words that contain that particular sound. Students are able to choose their spelling words and work on learning how to spell them in various hands on activities throughout the week. Monday will be the explicit teaching of this sound and Friday the students will be tested. Students will be exposed to various words containing the sound focused upon each week to ensure their knowledge retention.
Social skills are taught and discussed every Monday school wide. We have a focus in this area and the need for students to have strong and positive social skills. The following social skills areas taught this term will be:
Relationship/Friendship building skills: Looking at getting to know others, dealing with feelings, e.g. shy or lonely, how to be a good winner or loser, and how to get along with others.
Core Values: Honesty and fairness.
Growth Mindset/ Ready to learn
Our focus this term is to grow our students positive self-thinking. We want our students to believe their abilities and skills can be developed through dedication and hard work. This builds students resilience and persistence when challenged. We encourage our students to accept things may be a challenge, however we can use positive self-talk and motivation to build success.
The students will learn how to build their own positive self-thinking and how to support others in a safe learning environment.
Our Ready to Learn spaces in each classroom is designed to help students know their emotions and understand how deal with them in a positive way. The students are given time to calm their minds and choose a quiet activity to help sooth any worries they may be feeling. This enables the students to self-regulate their emotions and come back to the class ready to learn.
